8 Reasons, Why you should learn Wildlife Photography

Wildlife Photography is one the very exciting fields of photography simply because it captures one of the most dynamic elements of nature- wild flora and fauna. Mother Nature is full of splendor, with her fair shares of idiosyncrasies and anecdotes. And modern man has taken to capturing these lovely and bizarre moments in the best way he can with his long and short lenses. Here’s why wildlife photography is a great hobby to consider:

  1. We are nature-inhabitants at heart: Nature’s elements almost always never fail to awe us. We always love to observe the house sparrow building a nest in the window, or gaze at the delicate colours of a blooming flower, don’t we? This is because, despite the immense progress that we have made, we remain connected to nature and her ways, somewhere deep down. Nature pulls us towards her every step of the way, we simply cannot resist a beautiful nature-moment. So why not capture these moments and freeze them forever, by way of clicking photos?
  2. It’s a great challenge and a brain-racker: Capturing the best wildlife moments requires loads of inputs and efforts- behavioural knowledge, the right moment, and tons of patience, to name a few. Also, one does not have control over the subjects- that wild tiger is in no world going to listen to you when you command it to pose, is it? So you have to make the most of what is available to you- subject, habitat, light, rain etc. Many great photos have been shot only after the photographer spent excruciating discomfort and pain waiting for the right moment, in the worst of conditions (read swampy bogs, snowy scapes, ice-cold waters and desert heat). If you are the kind who’s always up for a challenge, there is simply no match to wildlife photography!

  3. There’s no scope to get bored: There’s always something new happening in nature. Even if you visit the same wild area a hundred times, each visit will be unique- a new species seen, or an old species in a completely different pose, or completely whacky weather that you’ve never experienced! The sheer number of habitats that one can explore on this earth are almost innumerable! So for those who need constant change and variety this is the perfect passion!

  4. Develops skills: As mentioned above, clicking great wildlife photographs requires a lot of skills, many of which can be applied and prove useful in real life too. Patience in clicking can help you become a more relaxed and calm person, which is great for your health! Being alert and focused will help you develop your concentration levels. Many of these are soft-skills which are indispensable in our jobs too. Who knows, you may just get the award of “best employee with soft-skills” at your company thanks to your hobby of wildlife photography!
  5. The adrenaline rush: On the other end of the spectrum is the constant feeling of anticipation and excitement when you see something new. If you are the kinds who loves an adrenalin rush, look no further. Pick up your lens and get going in search of your wild friends. Whether it is clicking a tiger in the wild, or sneaking up behind a King Cobra in the Western Ghats, the thrill is unbeatable!
  6. Making new friends: Finding like-minded people who are crazy about the same interest as you can be quite liberating. Knowing that you are not the only crazy one, lens in hand spending days stalking the tiny beetle in search of the perfect shot, is a great reassurance. You will be part of an entirely new community, discuss and share and gain knowledge, and get to learn. You will connect at a different level with people who share your interests.

  7. Getting fit and fine: Trekking up a mountain in extreme conditions to catch a glimpse and a photograph of the snow leopard. Or walking in wet weather for days in a bid to capture the beautiful birds of Goa. Or diving the beautiful Bali water in search of the gigantic Manta rays. Most wildlife encounters require you to approach the species stealthily and silently, through some form of physical activity. Which means that you will end up walking / trekking /swimming quite a lot and in turn, get fitter. Now isn’t that a great way to get your hands and feet moving, and your tummy receding?

  8. Supporting the cause: Wildlife photography has always been intricately linked with conservation photography. So if you dream of contributing to the cause of conservation in some way, this is a good starting point. Before you actually help “conserve” nature and wildlife, you must first acknowledge and appreciate it. And clicking beautiful photographs of wild denizens is a great first step towards conservation awareness.

Whatever your reason to choose this hobby, one thing is true- once the passion for photography grips you, there is no turning back. It is a journey from one milestone to the next, of becoming one with the subjects, understanding them well and most importantly, respecting them for who they are- wild and free.
