Description : This picture was taken at the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. I visited the sanctuary after a long while as it had been dry for last 4 to 5 years. There was already an image in my mind before going there, because I was aware that cormorants and pelicans prey on the large-sized fish in this lake. Interestingly, cormorants dive into the water to catch a fish, and as soon as they come on the surface the pelicans attack them and snatch the prey. So the cormorants try to eat the fish as fast as they can. As the lake is huge, there was plenty of activity going on. But I was in search of a tight frame and a close shot, for which, I was sitting in the same place for 7 days. The cormorants in the picture came on the surface for few seconds, though it was unable to swallow the very big fish it had caught in one go.
FIRST RUNNER-UP: Mr. Amish Patel
Description : This February, I was with my camera, when suddenly I saw a rosy pelican with a big fish in its pouch. I started shooting the action, but observing through my lens, I was shocked to see a Common Pochard female trying to come out of rosy pelican’s massive pouch. What a moment! The struggle continued for nearly 1.45 hours, when at last, the Common Pochard gave up the fight, probably having lost its strength due to suffocation. Finally, the Rosy Pelican swallowed the Pochard. I couldn’t believe it!
SECOND RUNNER-UP: Mr. Satpal SIngh
Description : While coming from Ghaghra river survey, I heard the sound of bats; when I looked up into the sky, I saw around 300-400 of them flying in an unusual way. They were shouting, almost as if calling out for help. On watching intently, I discovered that honey bees were driving the bats nuts. This is when I captured this moment in the frame.
