As reported in The Morung Express, the government of Assam has decided to dedicate a day to celebrate as well as raise public awareness for the rhinoceros, as decided in the 10th meeting of the State Board of Wildlife. The freshly minted “Rhino Day” is scheduled to be observed on September 22nd. The Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal has mentioned plans for a State Rhino Project along the lines of the National Rhino Project, to protect the one-horned animal from poaching. The CM has also asked for a ‘quick response team’ to be trained and kept ready to combat unnatural animal deaths. The need to initiate a survey of the elephant corridors aided by WWF was mentioned. “Once the elephant corridor mapping is completed, we will hold a meeting with the Ministry of Railways to take remedial steps like creating tunnels or overpass for the elephants,” said Sonowal. Official sources mentioned that plans were discussed to form a wildlife health and research institute, as well as the formation of a Special Battalion to protect wildlife in Manas NP.
