A young Javan rhino was found dead in late March in a protected area in Indonesia, leading to investigation for the cause of death. Wildlife experts have revealed the cause of death to be due to excessive bleeding which caused the animal to experience hypovolemic shock. Wounds found on the body of the dead rhino, mostly in the neck, stomack and shoulder areas, were most probably inflicted by a rival adult male, sustained during a fight over territory. The necropsy results have ruled out prior suspicion of the cause of death as due to illegal poaching activity or death caused by disease contracted from livestock. The death of the young male, known as Manggala, brings the global population of Javan rhinos down to 68.
